Depression

What is depression?

It's natural to feel down sometimes, but if that low mood stays day after day, it could be a sign of depression. Struggling to enjoy things, and feeling sad or low for longer periods of time to the extent that it is affecting everyday life – school, work, friends and relationships for example – can be a sign of depression.

It is important to remember that depression is not a sign of weakness and cannot be ‘willed away’ – it is a treatable illness, so talking to someone and asking for help is essential.

Symptoms include:

  • Trouble concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions

  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and helplessness

  • Fatigue

  • Pessimism and hopelessness

  • Irritability

  • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or sleeping too much

  • Aches, pains, headaches, or cramps that won't go away

  • Digestive problems that don't get better, even with treatment

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings
