What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Generalized anxiety disorder is excessive worrying about things with no particular reason to worry. People with symptoms of GAD tend to always expect the worse and they can't stop worrying about health, school, relationships, money, and jobs. In people with GAD have worries that are unrealistic or out of proportion for the situation. Daily life becomes a constant state of worry, fear, and dread. Eventually the anxiety dominates the person's thinking it interferes with daily functioning, including school, work, relationships and social activities.

Symptoms include: 

  • Excessive, ongoing worry and tension

  • An unrealistic view of problems

  • Restlessness or a feeling of being "edgy"

  • Irritability

  • Muscle tension

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Headaches

  • Sweating

  • The need to go to the bathroom frequently

  • Tiredness

  • Nausea 

  • Trouble falling or staying asleep

  • Trembling

  • Being easily startled
